Way of the Cross and The Rosary Way

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS

The Stations of the Cross represent Jesus’s painful journey to His crucifixion at Ta’ Pinu Marian Centre, a symbolic path was marked out around the hill, starting near the monument of Our Lady and ending near the chapel.

On 26th February 1996, a road was constructed to house the fourteen Stations of the Cross. Fourteen olive trees were planted the Stations of the Cross. The first pilgrimage of the Way of the Cross was held on the Easter Vigil Saturday 6th April 1996.   Three years past and fourteen wooden crosses were made to be placed at every station in front of every olive trees .

For this occasion, a very special celebration was held on Sunday 7th March 1999. His Lordship, Late Msgr Joe Grech, then auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne, blessed the 14 wooden crosses and then led the pilgrimage of a large crowd up the hill.

Every cross was carried in a formal procession and every cross was placed at every Station. It was a very touching ceremony reflecting the crucifixion of Our Lord.

Part of Monsignor Benedict Camilleri’s vision for Ta Pinu Marian Centre included a Way of the Cross replicating the Via Crucis on Ghammar Hill in Gozo, Malta. a few months after the wooden crosses were put in place, 43 lifesize concrete statues depicting Jesus’ crucifixion were ordered from Vietnam. In order to make the statues as real as possible, photos of the Stations of the Cross in Gozo were sent to Vietnam to ensure a precise reproduction. Each statue was funded by different individuals.  Two of those were donated By Bishop George Pell -one in the name of his parents and one on behalf of the Archdiocese.

The first set of Statues weighing 1500 kilograms were unloaded at Bacchus marsh on Wednesday 28 July 1999. tapinu340003 (Mobile)Over the next sixteen months, the remaining thirteen Stations were delivered to the site with the last set unloaded on 17th November 2000.

The project was a laborious task for all the people involved as the Director’s wish was to have the project completed by the end of the year 2000 to coincide with the Vatican’s Jubilee celebrations.

But it was all worth it!!!

On Saturday 2nd December 2000, Archbishop George Pell lead the congregation along the way of the Cross, blessing each Station. This ceremony was concluded with the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

For religious people, certain places hold a special affection. We, Christians, believe that the Son of God became a man and lived among us. From the earliest days, Christians have wanted to visit the places made sacred by the presence of the Saviour: Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, and Jerusalem…But not everyone can follow where his or her heart leads.
Today, in this new shrine built as far away from Jerusalem as we can be, we have dedicated this magnificent series of depictions of the Royal Road of the Cross, and we have followed after Christ as he climbed the hill of Calvary where He offered His life for us…
…God brings life where we do not expect to find it. God gives hope where there is only despair. God our Father was faithful to His Son. We are also the children of God, and God will be faithful to us. We are on our way to Eternal Life, and Jesus is here with us to support us as we follow him.
“We need places of pilgrimage such as this Marian Shrine which has become a holy place for many of you. The original Shrine of Our Lady Ta Pinu is in Gozo, Malta, and many of you have been used to going there from your earliest years to ask for Mary’s protection for your needs and those of your families.
Our sincere thanks to Msgr Camilleri and his cooperators for all their hard work in both the establishment of this shrine and the building of these new stations.
What is particularly an Australian touch is that Vietnamese craftsmen who made these statues.
As a country made from people of every language, we have learned to work together, and as a Church, we have learned to pray together so as to bring the Gospel to the people of our own time” – His Lordship Msgr George Pell, Archbishop of Melbourne’s address on Saturday 2nd December 2000 (Blessings of the Way of the Cross)

The Way of The Rosary

On Sunday 26th October 2003, A large congregation gathered at the foot of Our Lady to join The Archbishop of Melbourne, Denis J Hart and other members of the clergy for the blessing of the Bas Reliefs representing the four of twenty mysteries of the Rosary.

image_115“Mary our Mother, who leads  us to Jesus,  comes down to the celebration of the Eucharist when we honour her patronage” said the Archbishop Denis Hart in his introductory speech. “The Rosary is above all a contemplation of the mysteries by which we are saved. They are mysteries of Jesus and our mysteried and we are encircled by the love of Mary, His Mother, as we come to ponder them. .May Mary guide us in life as She does now in prayer and contemplation , coming to the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ”

In his address during the Homily, Archbishop Denis J Hart spoke about the value of the Rosary. He quoted ST John Pal II who on 16th October 2002 wrote a letter to the world in which he unfolded the new mysteries of the Light, wanting us to place the 25th anniversary of the pontificate and this specific year of the Church under the protection of Mary the Mother of God.

“The Rosimage_122ary has grown in the life of the Church in the second millenium under the guidance of the Spirit of God. it is a prayer loved by countless saints, encouraged by the Magisterium , and at the dawn of this third millenium is a prayer of great significance destined to bring forth a harvest of holiness. of great significance destined to bring forth the harvest of the holiness.

I believe that the Rosary is so powerful because it leads us to Jesus. Because we are guided b Mary, the Mother of prayer and because it is so simple.. It is adaptable to all kinds of circumstances.  It is a contemplation prayed in church, reflecting on the mysteries of Jesus with Mary . It can be prayed in a sick bed, during the night, while walking or travelling. It is a powerful way of  being united with the Lord and his Blessed Mother…

image_134“I urge you’, the Archbishop concluded, ‘to use the Rosary reverently and well”

To know that ‘walking with Mary, we have a sure way to be one with Christ and a simple way to come to the stillness and attention to Christ which can be found in a true prayer

I think we are all now invited to work to bring others to use the Rosary well, to pray it with devotion and then immeasurable blessing will come upon our Church, our parishes and our diocese.

During one of his regular visit back to Malta, Msgr Benedict commissioned Mr. Cassar to create 20 plaques representing the mysteries of the Cross. During his concluding speech at Eucharistic Celebration,  Msgr Camilleri delivered a warm message of gratitude to the hard and intricate work of Mr Jamal and Prisma, the two bricklayers who showed their skill and ability in the building of the five monuments and a special ‘Thank you’ went to Mr Sam Bruno and Mario Saliba for their precious help for the success of the event and finally a renewed salutation to the dedication and voluntary service of all those who gave a hand in its erection under the guidance of Mr. Charlie Borg.
